Full Description:

June 2010 ─ The carriage barn at Historic New England's Barrett House in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, is getting a new roof. The structure is part of the original complex built in 1800 as a wedding gift for Charles Barrett Jr. and Martha Minot. The existing roof was installed in 1979 and after thirty-one years has reached the end of its normal lifespan.

Keeping the exterior intact and ensuring that water stays out of a historic structure is a constant and costly task. Fortunately, through the establishment and initial funding of the Preservation Maintenance Fund, Historic New England, working with local company Fafard Brothers, is able to replace the roof before there is any significant damage to the building.

This is just one of the many projects Historic New England is undertaking during its centennial year. Visit HistoricNewEngland.org to learn more about our preservation goals and to read white papers about our approach the maintenance and replacement of historic roofs.  For more information on the project contact Kerry Vautrot at 617-994-6318.

Pictures of the roof work are available.
